MA in Conference Interpreting (NUI Galway)

Postby Amanda » Thu Oct 13, 2011 2:17 pm

Hi all,

I've seriously been thinking about pursuing conference interpreting. English is my mother tongue and I studied French and German for my degree. I'm from Ireland and I was researching the Masters in Conference Interpreting in Galway because I can't see myself moving abroad to study.... Has anyone heard anything about the course in Galway, any advice would be greatly appreciated! :-)

I'm not sure why I didn't know that NUIG offers this because Galway is one of my favorite places in the whole world! The website is unclear because it seems to suggest that the course could be only for Irish speakers, as no other B languages are offered other than Irish and English. It doesn't state whether ACC combinations without Irish are possible, but the fact that the course outline is presented in Irish makes me think that this isn't the case.

P.S. After googling around, it looks like you might be out of luck if you're not a gaeilgeoir. An article (link below) in The Galway Independent says the course is taught in Irish; it's part of the Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge anyway. Too bad. I'd kill to do a CI Masters in Galway.

Hi there,

N.U.I.Galway does offer places on the interpreting course to those without Irish as part of their language combination as of 2010. This year the course has mother tongue Irish, English and Spanish and a mixture of languages in between (EN, GA, DE, FR, ES). The languages are based on student requirements so if enough students with for example Italian, were to apply then the University tries to provide it.

The most up to date info on the course is here (but is due to update again soon for applications for 2012-2013 in November):

That galway independent link is from 2008. I did a quick search and found this page:
http://www.nuigalway.ie/administration_ ... irish.html
and then I searched using NUIG's own search function and found this:
http://www.nuigalway.ie/courses/taught- ... eting.html

Both pages state that the course offers:
(A Languages: EN and/or GA
B Languages: EN, GA
C Languages: EN, GA, ES, FR, DE)

Seems like a nice range of languages and it would suit your ACC combination Amanda...and Andrew, your dream might just come true yet! Did you contact NUIG?

Hi Andrew and Amanda,

You can do the course in Galway irrespective of Irish - it is not a requirement.
There are students with English, Irish and Spanish Mother tongue at the moment but that changes according to the year.

This news just made my day. :) So sans Irish you can only have an ACC combination, right? The fees page doesn't list the tuition for the course. Can someone tell me the costs for a non-EU citizen? And is there an more online information about the thesis that's part of the course?

Thanks Susan and Gary!

Hi Andrew,

As Susan said above, language combinations change every year so it is possible to cater for an ABC combination. The B language may not necessarily have to be EN or GA but there needs to be a demand for that language on the course in general.

The best place to get the information on fees is from NUIG itself (e-mail or call) but I found these links:

http://www.nuigalway.ie/student_fees/fe ... edule.html
http://www.nuigalway.ie/fees/June_2011/ ... fees1.html

Hope that helps,

Breda

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could provide any information RE their experiences in this program if they've attended? I'm enrolled to begin in the fall, and I still feel like I don't have a good idea of the program. There's just not a lot of information online, and I can't seem to find a place where any alums would be available to speak with. Any information is appreciated.

TIA!
